My Own Work-'A Visual Countdown'

This is the work I created for my first brief which was named 'A visual Countdown' where i had to create a set, series or sequence of numerical forms that communicated the starting point of 'Good' that I was given in a visually engaging way. The images above are my outcomes...I really enjoyed this brief, I felt I crasped it well and experiemented with different outcomes that could have been available. I wanted to communicate the numbers 0-9 using visual imagery representing the word 'Good' by illustrating cakes that look 'Good enough to eat' and the numerical forms were represented in the numbers of cherries on top of the cakes!

Friedrich Engel on Crowd in the City (Critical Studies)

For my Critical Studies I have been given this piece of text 'Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) on the Crowd in the City' I thought I would mention it in my blog and tell you a little bit about it! I got the idea that the text and image is all about industrial cities like London, Birmingham, Leeds etc and the desperate and needed search for the ideal urban form. Cities such as Birmingham and Sheffield grew immensly and Leeds more than doubled it's population between 1801 and 1831. It's all about the ever expanding cities and the disappearing countryside and also more importantly the hundreds and thousands of all classes and ranks crowding past each other with seemingly nothing in common and their only agreement is to 'keep to his own side of the pavement'.

Le Ciel Blue by Katachi

Le Ciel Bleu is unusual..not many designers use the human body as a canvas! It reminded me at first of Stefan Sagmeister's work alothough it being very different to his it is still using type and message on the human body, which I think is a really effective source of communication. Le Ciel Bleu is french for The Blue Sky so Im trying to understand the whole meaning of this image..can anyone help?

Have A Sweet Tooth

I just love this illustration..it reminds me of jellybabies and ice lollies! I just thought I would post this as it is fun and desirable and you almost want to eat the little sweet flavoured teeth. Its strange as normally teeth are associated as being undesirable but in this circumstance they look really attractive and yummy!I would like people to comment on which tooth is their fav!!!mine is the milk strawberry tooth!

Two Tops by Ken miki & Associates

This is a very clever interpretation of how type can be used envolving found objects combined with realistic photography on paper. I found this image in Japanese Graphics Now! The advertisment is for Arjo Wiggins which is a fine papers company hence the use of paper showing its fine qualities.
The overall look of the images and type used are very simplistic and subtle yet still very effective and clear...i really like this style of simplicity in work and want experiment with this technique for my 10 A6 postcards brief! I was thinking seeing as one of the top 10 things that I have learnt is to boil an egg I thought I could take a clear, high quality picture of an egg on a spoon and experient with type and paper in the style of Ken Miki.

Hot Pepper by Creative Power Unit

This is just a little image that I found in a book that caught my eye... Its a really unusual looking book...the pages are all see through and only have tiny little images on them, I thought I would post it for some inspiration!

I <3 New York

I came across this image in a book called Japenese Graphics Now! It is produced by a guy called Wataru Hasegawa and he creatively works with type. I chose to post this image as it is quite relevant to the brief that we are doing and I thought it was a good source of inspiration for me. It is a simple black and white image displaying NY-I love NY. The letters are formed by the use of text which looks really effective and unique and it has given me an insight into how much I could experiement with type and typography, I could maybe use this kind of style in my 10 A6 postcards displaying the top 10 things i have learnt.

LULA Magazine

This is a feature on sunglasses in association with Gucci by Jo Ratcliffe that I found in a magazine that I got from the ASOS website...personally I think that her work is quite inspirational to me and probably alot of others. It's a very modern and contemporary illustration attracting a wide range of viewers. I think that the illustartions for Gucci are very feminine and delicate and pay attention to detail and form. The image is a contrast between photography and handdrawn illustration and both are very prominent anf fighting for attention. The label Gucci is in amongst the flowers which is very effective as the flowers are what attracts the viewer to the design. The colours are vibrant and the use of line in the background of the image draws attention to the illustration effectively. I find this type of design really inspirational and I want to try to create some of my own work in this style in future briefs.
